The Problem

The United States incarcerates more people than any other country in the world. (NCCD.org)

  • Mecklenburg County has 3800 people incarcerated in jail and prison at any given time.
  • 1 in every 100 people is incarcerated. (Pew Charitable Trust Report, 2008)
  • 1 in every 163 adults in Mecklenburg County is incarcerated.
  • 2 in every 100 children have a parent who is incarcerated. (Center for Children of Incarcerated Parents)
  • 5,000 children living in Mecklenburg County are separated from their parent due to incarceration.

Why reentry services are needed

Overall, 97% of those incarcerated will return to the community. Most are released with little or no resources of any kind. Research shows that finding and retaining employment are major factors in preventing return to prison.
