Provide people with criminal records the conditions, resources and tools needed to reach their professional and personal goals.

Overall, 97% of those incarcerated will return to the community. Most are released with little or no resources of any kind. Research shows that finding and retaining employment are major factors in preventing a return to prison.

In 1974, The Center for Community Transitions began serving men being released from state prison, assisting them with employment and housing referrals. We continue to operate that program today for both men and women with criminal records who are returning to Mecklenburg County after being released from Federal and State prisons and from the Mecklenburg County jail.

The LifeWorks! program offers:

·        Employment Readiness Workshop --Workshops focus on preparing people with criminal records for interviewing and eventual employment.

·        Employment Search--The Center for Community Transitions does not provide job placement. However, we do provide jobs leads with employers who have stated a willingness to hire people with criminal records.
·        Case Management--The LifeWorks! staff works one-on-one with clients to determine personal goals and identify steps necessary to achieve them.
·        Referrals to Community Partners--The LifeWorks! program partners with other community agencies to ensure that clients have access to services needed to reach their goals and assist with emergencies.
·        Career Development & Job Retention--Once a client has obtained employment, our staff will work with the individual to identify career goals and develop a plan of action. Staff will also assist in resolving workplace conflict and stressful conversation.
·        Life Skills & Critical Thinking--Teaches clients self-evaluation, decision making as well as identifying the belief, values and principles we choose to live by.
